Affiliate banners don't work especially when they don't address a special niche where the page, which holds the banner, is related to.
This is the experience I made last months and perhaps you too.

This information draws a clear picture in my brain how it has to be done to get it to work successfully.

All of our pages are free information site. Information is what most people search for on the Internet.
You are an authority
You are an authority for your theme sites or you'll become an authorities after you added more relevant and useful content.
Because you are the authority people trust you and believe what you are talking about.
They come to your site to get their questions be answered and get an advice what to do, which product or service to buy, they need your recommendation.
How to convert this knowledge to profit?
When writing articles always have the reader of this article in your mind. Why should he be interested in reading this article, what information does he need to get in this article, which product he wants?
Than write about product and services, their advantages and disadvantages, price/performance ratio, what do you think about it and last not least a keyword rich link to this product or service.
Always have you site visitor in your mind
Search for products which fit to your site and write about it. Write a review, about technical issues when any, pros and contras, why to use it or not, where to get it, prices, history, who is marked leader and why, providers, local issues, experiences etc.
Beware PR of your pages
Always take a
java script link to prevent loosing PR. SEs now have started to identify affiliate links to give them a deduction in PR. They don't want to index thousands of affiliate pages for the same product mostly without any useful content.

To know which affiliate program works on which page is essential.
Write the no of the affilate link with the page on which you put it in an Excel file for later usage.
